Bundesliga

The top German football league, Bundesliga, was founded in 1962 in Dortmund, with the first season starting in 1963. Both the organisation and structure of the Bundesliga have undergone numerous and frequent changes but is now operated by the Deutsche Futball Liga. The Bundesliga currently boasts the football league with the highest average stadium attendance across the world.

The league format sees 18 teams competing for the top spot, with the bottom sides facing relegation to the 2nd division Bundesliga. Seasons run between August and May of the following year, with the majority of games being played on either Saturday or Sunday, however, sometimes games are played on weekdays if pitches are unavailable during weekends. All of the Bundesliga teams qualify for the DFB-Pokal, and the winner of the Bundesliga qualifies for the DFL-Supercup.

Since the league’s inception, a total of 54 teams have competed in the league. The most successful club in the league is Bayern Munich, which has managed to finish top the highest number of times, winning the title 27 times.

According to data from the UEFA, the Bundesliga is the fourth most successful football league in Europe.
